The Department of Animal Science, under the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, is committed to advancing knowledge and skills of undergraduate students since 2010 E.C. The programs designed to produce competent professionals who can contribute to national and regional livestock development. Currently, the department has 37 under graduate students, 24 lecturers (2 PhD, 18 MSc, and 4 PhD candidates) and 2 technical assistances.

Through an integration of teaching, research, and community engagement, the department addresses key issues related to animal breeding and genetics, nutrition, physiology, health, and production systems. Research activities in the department emphasize improving animal productivity, ensuring environmental sustainability, and enhancing food security. In collaboration with NGOs (ILRI), the department currently running community services project.

Overall, the Department of Animal Science serves as a hub of innovation and capacity building in the livestock sector, contributing significantly to the mission of the Werabe University which is to promote sustainable agricultural growth.
