Sport Science

About the Department

The Werabe University Department of Sport Science was established in 2019 to advance sport science education, research, and community engagement. The department is part of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences and is one of eight dynamic departments in the college. Our facilities are designed to support practical training, applied research, and a safe, student-centered learning environment.

Currently, the department offers two Bachelor’s degree programs and serves 38 undergraduate students. The academic team consists of 10 lecturers with diverse coaching and sport science specializations, as well as one technical assistant holding a BSc in Sport Science. Notably, one of our staff members is currently pursuing a PhD at a recognized national university.

Our lecturers bring expertise in a variety of specializations, including: Football coaching, Basketball coaching, Athletics coaching, Handball coaching, Teaching in physical education, Health and fitness, Sport management, and Massage and therapy. Over the past two years, the department has achieved a 100% pass rate on the Ethiopian national exit exam, exemplifying our commitment to academic excellence. To enrich both teaching and student learning experiences, the department provides a standardized gymnasium equipped with modern exercise and rehabilitation machines, along with regulation-standard football, handball, basketball, athletics, and volleyball courts.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Sport Science is to support students in achieving academic and professional goals while encouraging moral and ethical exploration through rigorous coursework and experiential learning. The department strives to discover, create, and disseminate knowledge of human movement to improve quality of life for individuals and society. We aim to produce a highly skilled workforce that delivers socioeconomic and political benefits to communities through quality and relevant teaching, learning, research, and community service in sport and health-related disciplines.
