The
Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science is a four-year program
offered by the Department of Medical Laboratory Science under the College of
Medicine and Health Sciences, Werabe University since 2019. The program is
designed to equip students with a solid foundation in laboratory sciences and
to prepare them for their vital role in healthcare delivery and disease
diagnosis, prevention and control. The curriculum integrates both theoretical
instruction and extensive practical training across a wide range of
disciplines, including immunology, serology, hematology, immunohematology,
molecular biology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, bacteriology, parasitology,
mycology, virology, public health microbiology, and histopathology.
Students
undertake three hospital clinical attachments, one advanced and research
laboratory attachment and a comprehensive internship in well-equipped
laboratories at health centers, primary hospital and comprehensive specialized
teaching hospitals, enabling them to gain real-world experience in routine and
advanced diagnostic procedures and laboratory management. Additionally, two
community-based trainings are incorporated to enhance students’ ability to
identify and address public health challenges through practical problem-solving
and community engagement.
By
the end of the program, students are required to complete a research project
under the guidance of experienced academic advisors, fostering their skills in
scientific inquiry and evidence-based practice. The curriculum also includes
general and supportive courses such as epidemiology, biostatistics, research
methodology, economics, entrepreneurship, critical thinking, and health service
management, which broaden students’ professional competence and enhance their
competitiveness in the job market.
Overall,
the program aims to produce highly skilled, ethical, and professional medical
laboratory scientists capable of performing, interpreting, and reporting
laboratory results with accuracy and integrity. Graduates are expected to
demonstrate strong teamwork, innovative problem-solving abilities, and digital
literacy, contributing effectively to the advancement of healthcare and medical
research in Ethiopia and beyond.
