Werabe University, one of the eleven fourth-generation universities established in Ethiopia, commenced its journey in March 2016 (2008 E.C.) following decree No. 322/2014 from the Council of Ministers of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The university officially began operations in February 2018, aiming to address the educational and developmental needs of our region.

Higher educational institutions play a crucial role in community service, focusing on thematic areas that align with local and national priorities. At Werabe University, we have adopted four key thematic areas: business and economics, agriculture, tourism, and technology. These areas reflect the pressing needs of our communities and the potential for impactful contributions from our academic expertise.

To implement these priorities effectively, our academic staff are actively engaged in delivering their research and technological outputs. They are exploring, enhancing, and utilizing indigenous knowledge to tackle community challenges, ensuring that their projects are relevant to the needs of the community. Faculty members align their endeavors with the university's thematic focus, fostering a synergy between academic research and community needs.

The Technology Transfer and Community Service Directorate Office at Werabe University/WRU is dedicated to promoting innovation and fostering collaboration between the academic community and local people. By effectively translating research breakthroughs into practical applications, this office aims to empower local industries and drive sustainable development across the three catchment areas. Through strategic partnerships, outreach initiatives, and comprehensive community engagement efforts, we strive to ensure that the benefits of technological advancements are accessible to all members of society, thereby enhancing economic growth and improving the overall quality of life.

Importantly, these community engagement initiatives are not confined to academic staff alone. Students at WRU are also encouraged to participate in various activities, fostering a culture of service and responsibility. This collaborative approach not only enriches the educational experience for students but also amplifies the positive impact on the community.

In alignment with the Ethiopian Higher Education Proclamation No. 650/2009, along with the revised Proclamation No. 1152/2019, community service stands as one of the three primary mandates for universities. This legislation obligates academic staff to engage actively in community service, fulfilling their responsibilities not only to their institution but also to the communities they serve. At WRU, senate legislation explicitly requires all faculty members to allocate 15% of their working hours to community service activities, emphasizing our commitment to societal well-being.

Together, through the combined efforts of faculty, students, and local stakeholders, we aim to create a vibrant ecosystem of innovation and engagement that benefits both the university and the communities we serve. Annual Innovation Fair: Hosting an annual fair to showcase research projects and innovations from students and faculty, inviting community members to explore and engage with the work being done.

Technology Transfer Seminars: Organizing seminars that educate the community on emerging technologies developed at the university and their potential applications in local industries.

Participatory Action Research: Involving community members in research projects that address local issues, ensuring their voices are included in the research process and outcomes.

Local Business Support Programs: Collaborating with local businesses to conduct research that supports their growth, providing students with real-world experience while benefiting the community.
